CAS Module 4: Material and Solar Cell Characterization and Modelling

Content

CAS Module 4 Material and Solar Cell Characterization and Modelling consists of four courses with a total workload equivalent to 14 ECTS points, focusing on the most important characterization tools used in material and solar cell characterization.

Learning Goals

  • Fundamentals of Solar Cell
This course covers the fundamental physical processes of photovoltaic energy conversion which is an essential prerequisite for all scientific and technological activities in photovoltaics.
  • Material and Solar Cell Characterization
This course gives an overview over the most important characterization tools used in material and solar cell characterization. Students gain the knowledge required for correct selection and use of the methods and have an understanding of the limits of different methods.
  • Advanced Material and Solar Cell Characterization
This course covers the multi-dimensional effects in solar cells and the related material characterization. The students will get to understand the working principle of advanced characterization tools for spatially resolved solar cell characterization and the related physical models for measurement interpretation.
  • Numerical Simulation of Solar Cells
This course covers the governing equations that describe charge transport in solar cells. Students will learn the meaning of: the primary solution variables, derived quantities, and main results of a solution of the governing equations. The students will also learn the difference between locally distributed models and time-dependent models, application examples for solar cell design and analysis, and PV system simulation.

Pilot Phase and Administrative Information

Apply now! Pilotphase starts June 2, 2014. Application deadline is May 26, 2014.
You will work closely with the project administrators, give feedback and help evaluating the module. During pilot phase there are no tuition fees in this module.

Upon successful completion of the module of the pilot phase you will receive an attendance certificate of the University of Freiburg indicating the number ECTS credit points and the content of the module.

The Curriculum Solar Energy Engineering is part of the project “Freiräume für wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung – Windows for Continuing Education” at the University of Freiburg and is financially supported by the “Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung” (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) within the Framework “Aufstieg durch Bildung: Offene Hochschulen”. During this early stage your regularly feedback is required in order to evaluate the program.

If you happen to have a very strong background in PV R&D, you might be eligible to skip the first course “Fundamentals of Solar Cells” and start the module in October 2014. An admission committee decides upon your application and the crediting of courses.

Workload

  • 14 ECTS credit points (equivalent to a workload of 350 to 420 hours)
  • Work on your exercise sheets regularly. Attend the Online Meetings.
  • Come to Freiburg at the end of the semester to our Campus Phase, meet lecturers, tutors, and fellow students, and pass each course’s exam.
  • During the first run, the module is tested and evaluated. Your feedback is required and well appreciated. Participate in the evaluation.
